Last night was the Kim Hicks Blogger Party hosted by Derek Warburton at Talent Resources. What an amazing collection. We got a sneak peak at a few of the gowns to be shown next week at Kim's Fashion Show. The brownstone was buzzing and people could not get enough of the girls. John Barrett Salon did the hair and makeup on them and they looked stunning.

Bri Arden Album Release Gig at Rockwood Music Hall

Last night was the Bri Arden Album Release Gig at Rockwood Music Hall. I heard about the gig from my friend and drummer Jake Cohen who was performing with her.
She is amazing and so was her band who also included Justin Goldner, Oscar Bautista, Jason Wexler, Ian Schaefer, and Kate Ferber. Rockford was jammed packed and most of the audience new all her songs by heart.
I was glad I got there an hour early because those who didn't missed the show! Good luck Bri. You truly rock!

Jessica Sailer from Vogue gets married in St Barths

When Jessica Sailer, the Fashion Market Editor at Vogue and her fiance Mark wanted to get married in St Barths neither of them had actually ever been to the island. This very busy couple who spend their weeks in NY both play polo on the weekends so trying to organise a destination wedding meant finding someone on the island to take care of all their needs.
Melanie Smith is the go to person on St Barths. The couple needed two villas close to each other for them and their families to stay in. The wedding ceremony was in the church in Gustavia and the reception followed at Eden Rock. After a delicious dinner of local lobster it was time for the couple to cut the amazing cake. I had watched it being assembled by the pastry chefs from Maya's to go. Because of the warm weather it was kept inside until it was ready to be cut.
After that it was dancing on the beach followed by a swim in the ocean. Luckily Jessica had changed into a second outfit and was by that time bare foot however some of the other guests were tossed in shoes and all.
Elouise the youngest guest at the dinner kept very busy drawing portraits of all the guests, As you can see she has a big career in front of her but first she has to finish 1st grade.

Lesley and Rob get married in Palm Beach

A few weeks ago I flew down to Florida for the wedding of Lesley and Rob. They had chosen to get married at Mar a Lago. The location is spectacular. I was thrilled when they told me they using Bryan Rafanelli and his team. I knew that it was going to be amazing. Lesley looked fabulous in her Vera Wang gown. The couple met before the ceremony so that we could take the family photos before the sun went down.
Check out the dress she changed into for the after party. It was HOT.

There were many reasons to be smiling at the Child Mind Institute Gala. Everyone's favorite performer Jimmy Buffett and his beautiful Jane were being honored with the 2011 Child Advocacy Award and if that was not enough the evening raised over $5.3 million.
After receiving their award Matt Lauer walked on stage with Jimmys' guitar wearing a parrot on his head. Jimmy surprised the attendees by performing “Song for the Little Children” and “Volcano”
Some of the guests included Robert De Niro and Grace Hightower, Chuck Close, New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, Bronson Van Wyck, John McEnroe, Nicole Miller, Marcia Mishaan and Mike Ramos

Happy New Year

I just got back from a very quick trip home to Australia. I arrived in Sydney on Christmas Day in time for the big family meal. After 3 days of visiting friends and relatives I jumped on a plane and headed to Bali to visit my uncle and his wife and to celebrate the new year. Always an adventure Bali was magical and relaxing. Traveling very light my iPhone was the camera of choice. This is a temple in Ubud.

Jennifer and Hans Wedding

When Hans and Jennifer called to tell me they were getting married I had my fingers crossed that I would be available for the date. They are an inspiring couple. The wedding proved to be a perfect expression of their creative lives and talents. Hans who is an architect by training is also a gifted photographer, Pianist and poet. Jennifer has a passion for food and people and together they created with the help of some amazing people the perfect wedding.
Molly Middleton Events lead the team that helped realise the couples ideas. Hans redesigned the interior space of the indoor riding arena and commissioned a 30 foot chandelier to be made by local craftsmen. He bought in earth and trees and created a forest.
Jennifer and Hans worked closely with Renny and Reed Event design to create a magical circle in the garden for the ceremony and to decorate the space for the cocktails and dinner.
The catering was done by Olivier Cheng Catering . The guests arrived by bus from NY and were greeted with hot chocolate and mini donuts. No one could resist them.
The weather looked bad. It had rained all morning on and off. Hans had weather reports from everywhere and Molly had umbrellas in position. At the last minute it was decided to go ahead and do the ceremony outside. The umbrellas were on stand by but luckily we did not need them.
Once inside the barn the guests enjoyed cocktails and found their escort cards which were little boxes filled with a chocolate mouse.
The cake was amazing. It was 3 layers held in place by a sculptured tree form. Jennifer had seen the pastry chef Elizabeth Hodes on the cooking channel and tracked her down.

La Grenouille NYC

Today I went up town to La Grenouille to take some photos. Yes I know it is a restaurant but to me is more than that. When I go there I always feel like Alice in Wonderland. Instead of falling down a rabbit hole all I have to do is walk up the narrow stairs and I am transported into another world.
Today there was a lunch for a private client. There was one long table with so many things magically woven together.
There is a wooden bowl that always has something different in it. Today it was filled with walnuts.
After I finished photographing I went down stairs and enjoyed a truly delicious meal and wouldn't you guess, when I was served the cheese there were the freshest walnuts waiting to be popped into my mouth.

The amazingly talented Marissa Dreesen joined us to do the makeup. We were so lucky with the weather. Yes it is winter but we had a very mild 60 degrees so after some fun photos in my studio we went up to Central Park.

Last night was the FAI Winter Gala 2011 at The Warldorf Astoria. It is amazing to think that in 14 years the FAI has raised over 80 Million dollars to research food allergies. Started by the amazing Sharyn Mann this years the honorees were Alfred Portale from Gotham Bar and Grill and Douglas L. Braunstein the CFO of JPMorgan Chase.
Sharyn was given an award for all that she has done as well.
David Koch and his wife Julia were the Corporate Dinner Chair and Gala Dinner Chair between them.
After the awards Audra McDonald and Norm Lewis sang songs from Porgy and Bess. The room was decorated by Remco from VAN VLIET & TRAP

Moma Film Benefit 2011

Who says life is not a bed of Roses? Well last night certainly was a night of shining stars and roses as Moma Film Benefit rolled out the red carpet with a backdrop of fresh red roses to welcome Pedro Almodovar, Alicia Keys who later sang, Anna Wintour, Bruce Weber, Sarah Jessica Parker, Drew Barrymore and a flock of other movie stars and guests.
After cocktails the guests moved to the theater where Marie-Jose Kravis greeted everyone. Bruce Weber introduced Pedro with a song and said he was taking the opportunity to use it as an audition in the hope of making it into the next film.
Penelope Cruz and Antonio Banderas sent video messages that were heart felt by all.
The guests then went up stairs to dinner. The room looked amazing. The very talented Raol Avila was responsible for all the decor.
After the main course was served Alicia Keys took to the stage. It is always so amazing to hear her singing live.

The main reason for my trip to Doha is to attend The fourth biennial Hamad bin Khalifa Symposium on Islamic Art, the fascinating symposium God is Beautiful; He loves Beauty, held at the Museum of Islamic Art and organised by Sheila S. Blair and Jonathan M. Bloom.
Last night was the opening ceremony. After being welcomed to the museum by Sheikha Al Mayassa Al Thani the keynote Speaker was Paul Goldberger who is the Architecture Critic for The New Yorker. He described the museum designed by I.M.Pei in its historical context and discussed the importance of the container and that which it contains.
I live in a world of images not words and so to be put in this beautiful space and to have it described by language that I understood at the same time was an exciting experience for me. He described the modern museum as a place that brings together like minded people and that it is an experience for the soul.
The building is a combination of circles squares and triangles and is located on an island connected to the Corniche.
After the talk everyone was invited to dinner in one of the wings of the Museum.
Today the Symposium starts at 9 am and I look forward to learning more about the works of art housed in this mighty structure.

The Arab Museum of Modern Art in Doha and Katara

Yesterday was a very busy day. I was wisked off to the Arab Museum of Modern Art to catch the last day of the SWALIF show. It was a collection aptly called Qatari Art between memory and modernity. The space its self is stunning. Located 15 minutes from the center of town the structure maintains it feeling of newness with the permanent scaffolding that adorns the exterior. Upon entering one is met by the majestic portraits of the Emir and his wife Her Highness Sheikha Mozah Bint Nasser Al Missned that stand over 30 feet high. I was told that they were secretly commissioned by their daughter Al Mayassa Al Thani and were painted by Yan Pei-Ming.
The exhibition was fascinating. It was comprised of locally made works of art dating from the 1960's to the present time. I love the interactive piece called "I want to Remember" where viewers were invited to write on a postcard and peg it to the strings. Now what I really want to remember is who made this living sculpture. I was so into writing a post card that I forgot to photograph the name of the artist.

The Arab Museum of Art

From the Museum I headed over to visit Hillary and her team at the Ruby Stone Productions office at Katara which is the amazing cultural Center where the Tribeca Film Festival has been held. She had suggested that I not miss stopping by to take in the waterside location that made a stunning backdrop for the buildings that occupy the location. Hillary was running around making sure everything was in place for the last day of the Red Carpet but I had a chance to say hello to the rest of her team.
I was blown away by the out door amphitheater. There were many beautiful building but another that stood out was covered in gold tiles and glistened in the sun light. There were also large bird house structures that fascinated me. The textures and materials used were beautiful everywhere I looked.

Qatar

My favorite travel camera has to be my iPhone. I never feel intrusive and I love the way it turns the images into little squares of color, capturing the essence of how I see the world around me.
Qatar has a fascination for me. The new is everywhere to see while the history is here to be felt. The people are kind and respectful towards each other and towards me as a tourist visiting this city as it transforms its self into a cutting edge modern city of the world embracing green technology, the digital age and the power of social networking.
Education, art and religion are the things that unite these people to themselves as they build bridges reaching out beyond their cultural, spiritual and artistic borders.

I just arrived in Qatar and have a very busy few days ahead of me but tonight it was time to walk around the Souk followed by dinner at the W Hotel where i ran into Hillary Gutstein. She and her company Ruby Stone Productions are running the Red Carpet for the Doha Tribeca Film Festival.
I am here for the Symposium at the Art Gallery designed by I.M.Pei. This is a view of the old mosque from my hotel window located in Souq Waqif.

Last night was the American Federation of Art Gala at The Metropolitan Club in NY City. This year, the AFA honored renowned performance artist Marina Abramović and National Gallery of Art Director Earl A. Powell III at the annual gala. The evening included cocktails, dinner, the awards ceremony, dancing, and a raffle, with artworks generously donated by landscape painter April Gornik and Australian artist/activist Richard Bell (whose work is the subject of the AFA exhibition Richard Bell: Uz Vs. Them).

Rita Hayworth Alzheimer's Association Gala 2011

Tuesday night was the Rita Hayworth Alzheimer's Association Gala 2011 at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel. I arrived and went straight to the Ball room in search of David Monn who was doing the decor.
The room looked great. I felt like I was on a movie set from the 1940's. Yes it was Hollywood Glamour at it's NY best.
David combined candles and large paper peonies with sheer black and white drapes to create the mood.
I found him making the final touches to a table and went to say hi.
It seems that everyone is effected by this terrible disease. David's mom has been suffering for the last 8 years and he was running off to see her as soon as he was done.
All the benefit committee women arrived and I managed to find some chairs so we could take a group photo.
Later during the dinner on stage Princess Jasmine Aga Khan looked amazing. Somers Farkas, in a silver sequined Naeem Khan spoke of how the disease has affected her loved ones. She was followed by Mindy Grossman, the powerhouse CEO of HSNi, who spoke of the tragic experience losing, her parents to Alzheimer's.

Last night was The Studio Museum in Harlem Fall Gala 2011 at Cipriani Wall Street. It was awesome.
Always the best dressed party of the season, this year was no exception.
Thelma Golden looked sensational in a dress designed by her very talented husband Duro Olowu who accompanied her to the event. As always the 3 gala co-Chairs, Kathryn Chenault, Joyce K. Haupt and Carol Sutton Lewis were stunning and the gala vice chairs Jacqueline L. Bradley, Amelia Ogunlesi and Teri Trotter were radiant.
Raymond McGuire was in full form and complimented the room and all the beautiful women joking that there was a guy in a neck brace still recovering from last year's head turning crowd.
The event raised over $1.600.000

Sanctuary for Families

It has been a very busy couple of days with hardly any time to stop and think. Last night after photographing a family portrait I headed over to photograph a private dinner at La Grenouille.
Fall is in the air and I could not wait to see the private dinning room and the flowers. Charles, who took over the restaurant in 1975 from his father has carried on the family tradition of doing the flowers himself each day. They always reflects both his whimsey and the season.
I ran up the stairs and the first thing I saw was the wooden bowl with pumpkin and squash in it.
The tables were beautiful. There were lots of roses and orange ball like flowers. I asked their name and they are called Japanese lanterns.
The dinner was classic and elegant. There was a tiny taste of pea soup followed by Lobster and Tarragon Ravioli. Next came Roasted Lamb Chops with Rosemary and tiny vegetables.
To finish the dinner off there was a fabulous Ice cream treat. There was a gasp in the room when the waiters came in carrying La Bombe Glacee. After showing it off the Maitre'D flambéed the Macerated Fruits with Kirsch and poured it over the Milk Chocolate and Caramel Ice Cream.
No one left a morsel of food on their plates and every one left feeling happily restored.

Last night was the Hispanic Society of America Fall Gala 2011 held at 583 Park Avenue.
The 2 beautiful honorees were Liliana Godia and Soumaya Slim de Romero.
It was a fabulous group of people, beautifully dressed and wonderful dancers
I try not to have favorite people to photograph but sometime I just can not help it. There was a woman siting in the corner who was so captivating in her elegant gown. On the dance floor it was Marlene Hess and Jim Zirin who first danced with friends and then span around together. These 2 leave a trail of happy faces where ever they go.
Oscar de la Renta was there with his wife Annette. They seem to be at every party I go to. Yes their social calendar must be very busy at this time of the year.

Carnegie Hall Fall Gala 2011

Last night was the Carnegie Hall Fall Gala 2011. It was the 120 Anniversary of the hall and to celebrate they chose to celebrate Tchaikovsky who was the conductor on the official opening night of Carnegie Hall in New York in May 1891. Yo-Yo Ma and Valery Gergiev with his orchestra performed an all-Russian program.
During the dinner at The Waldof Astoria Clive Gillinson read a letter sent from Putin . It was a reminder that music transcends all borders.
The room looked amazing. The very talented David Stark had worked with Joan Weill and had used candles and votives to fill the space.

Last Night was the Black Alumni of Pratt "Celebration of the Creative Spirit" Benefit Fall Gall at the Pierre Hotel. Also known as BAP they honored Jeff Koon, George Lois, John Parham and his wife Maruchi Santana and David Adjaye.
Thomas Schutte the President of Pratt was there as was the new President of The Black Alumni Gerri Brown. The Hon. David Dinkins was there and as always everyone was thrilled to see him.
Denise Wiggins who is the new Events Manager did a great job.

Last night was The Metropolitan Opera Fall Gala in NYC. What an amazing event. The opera was broadcast live in Lincoln Center Plaza and the place was buzzing both inside and out. After the most amazing performance by Anna Netrebko and the rest of the fantastic cast the guests headed to the tent where David Stark had worked his magic. The space glowed. The dinner started around 10 and the next time I looked at the time it was well after 1am. Mercedes Bass looked stunning as did Mrs Ziff. Also Peter Gelb's beautiful wife Keri-Lynn Wilson was there. She looked stunning in a dress designed by Zac Posen

New York City Ballet Fall Gala

Last Thursday night was the New York City Ballet gala and the premiere of the collaboration between Peter Martins and Sir Paul McCartney who wrote the music. Keeping it all in the family Stella designed the costumes.
I have never seen so many women in Blue all in the same place at once. They were inspired by the theme of the Ballet called Ocean's Kingdom.
The stars came out to support Sir Paul and in the crowd were Bon Jovi, Angelica Huston, Sarah Jessica Parker, Jessica Seinfeld, to name just a few.
After the ballet the guest headed to the tent where they were served a vegan dinner that not only tasted good, was good for the planet.

The Chicago Symphony Orchestra Gala

I had a wonderful time on Saturday Night covering the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Gala in the windy city.
It was raining when I arrived but by 5 pm the weather was looking better so luckily everyone arrived without getting soaked.
After the concert the guests went the the Hilton where they had dinner following by dancing. The room looked great. It was my first time there and I loved all the chandeliers.

La Grenouille NYC

Yesterday was the first day of fall as I was reminded by Charles at La Grenouille.
I was there at lunch time to photograph a private party.
After a very long taxi ride through the crazy streets of Manhattan I arrived at the tranquil haven on 52nd St where the flowers always make me feel like I am in a country home far from the city.
There were roses on the tables but my favorite were the lilies hidden in corners to be found like a treasure hunt as I explored the space. Every nook and cranny has something to inspire me.
This lilly was in a vase upstairs near the piano and I had to take a moment to capture it. It's colors seemed to signal the end of summer to me.
The guests lunched on chilled cucumber soup, fresh delicious salmon on a bed of lentils and an apple sorbet for desert with a surprise of lemon curd in the bottom of the glass.
It was light and perfect for the guests who had to venture back to their offices and the traffic that they had forgotten about during the precious time they had spent eating wonderful food in such special surroundings.

Nick and John get married

Yesterday I had the best day ever. Nick and John who have become my newest bestest friends got married at their home and I was there as guest and photographer or should I say guest photographer. This amazing couple have been together for over 25 years. I have known them for a little over a year. I was thrilled when Nick called a few weeks ago to tell me the great news and to ask if I would come and shoot the wedding.

The Lili Thomas and Howard Buffett Wedding in Omaha

It was such a fabulous weekend. My team and I arrived in Omaha on Thursday for the wedding of Lili Thomas to Howard Buffett, just as the hail storm hit. We had a very adventurous start which included being showered with baseball sized hailstones.

It was touch and go as to where the wedding would take place 2 days later.

Howard had proposed to Lili in the Rose Garden at the White House and so the couple had decided to get get married in the Rose Garden at Memorial Park.

The final decision was not made until Saturday morning as the clouds and storms had been forecast to last all weekend.

Howard made the call and the sun came out. It truly was a magnificent setting for this wonderful couple.

A Hamptons Wedding

A summer wedding in the Hamptons is always a joy to photograph. One of the best things is to try and plan to have cocktails before the sun goes down. This way the photographer can catch the beauty and the magic of the fabulous out doors. Sarah and Pascale chose to get married at 4 pm so that everyone could enjoy their beautiful garden before going into the tent. Bill Tansey created lots of little siting areas and draped fairy lights in the trees that made the garden shimmer as the sun went down.

Maya's Restaurant in St Barths

I am having the most amazing week. I am in St Barths photographing fabulous food.
Maya and Randy are finally working on a cook book and I am so happy to be part of the project.
I never really realised how much work goes into every dish. From shopping in the market and choosing the freshest produce to standing over a hot stove to sear the mouth-watering sea scallops, or the other wonderful dishes Maya and her kitchen staff work together producing light and tasty food.
Then there is her husband Randy and the wait staff who welcome all the guests and make it so much fun to eat at the restaurant. No wonder people keep coming back year after year.

Ravinia Festival Gala 2011

I just got back from Chicago where I spent the last few days. I was there to photograph the Ravinia Festival Gala Benefit.
It was amazing. Hot as can be but luckily no rain, over 800 people came in black tie to hear the program that celebrated the music of George Gershwin.
David Alan Miller lead the Chicago Symphony Orchestra while Kelli O’Hara, Brian Stokes Mitchell and Sylvia McNair added the vocals and Kevin Cole played the piano.
It took about 2 minutes for the men to take off their jackets after they walked in.
The tent looked fabulous and as soon as the concert was over everyone entered and took their seats for the dinner to follow.
It is always great when the performers come to the tent. They were all very gracious about being photographed.

Julia and Eric get married

It was a perfect weekend. The weather was warm but not to hot, the location was Oyster Bay and the bride and groom were surrounded by their family and favorite friends.
Julia and Eric had been to visit me in the city a few months ago so I was really looking forward to seeing them again.
I drove out of the city on Friday at noon and luckily missed the traffic.
Julia looked so beautiful in her strapless gown.
The high light for me was getting to ride to the club on Julia's fathers boat.
What a way to arrive at the reception.
Otis the dog was not allowed to come with us but he was there to oversee the getting ready photos.

La Grenouille NYC

It started with the peaches. They were in an organic shaped wooden bowl just inside the door. They captured my attention and I could not pass them by with out taking a photo. They were lush and velvety, a perfect summertime fruit.
Tonight I went to photograph a private dinner at La Grenouille.
I was early. It is easy to be early when I know there are things I want to take my time to photograph. The flowers were beautiful but it was the peaches that really inspired me first.
I photographed the space and then the guests arrived. They mingled and sipped cocktails while admiring the beautiful room.
When I was finished I was invited downstairs to sit at the bar where I was served the most delicious light tasty meal. The salad with tomatoes exploded fresh flavor with every bite. The salmon was crisp and light and was nestled on orange scented purple rice. It melted in my mouth.
I had asked for small helpings so I could make it to dessert and I was not disappointed.
First a little tray of petit fours was put in front of me followed by a water mellon granita topped with peach sorbet.
I stepped out into the humid heavy air feeling light as a butterfly. When no taxis came my way I happily walked for 10 blocks.
I love summer and I love the heat but most of all I love the peaches.

Anita and Sunil get married in Boston

I love India and the next best thing is an indian wedding. I was so excited when Anita and Sunil asked me to travel up to Boston for the weekend to cover the event.
I got to meet lots of new people including the organizer Gina Anderson and the videographer Whit Wales both of whom were great to work with.
In true Indian fashion Anita and Sunil changed after the ceremony. The shot to the left are the outfits they wore to dinner. The Mandarin Oriental Hotel Boston was a great location for the wedding. They were able to use the courtyard in the back of the hotel for the arrival on the horse.

The Summer Party at the Frick

Last night was the Summer Party at the Frick.

Most of the women were wearing short retro dresses and hats as they braved the heat wave and ventured outside to the lilly pond and mingled with the dapper men who dressed to match.

A few stayed in side but where ever they chose to be they all sipped on the refreshing spanish Anna De Cordorniu wine that was being served.

I loved the pink hat with matching pink dress. I felt like I had stepped into a Woody Allen movie and that time was bent into the past.

Sarah Fox and Calvin Ford get married in Detroit

It was an amazing weekend back in June. The weather was really hot and rain was scheduled to fall but luckily it held out Saturday even though we could see lightning in the distance. The couple were married at the Grosse Pointe Memorial Church in Grosse Pointe Farms, MI. followed by the reception held at the Edsel and Eleanor Ford House in Grosse Pointe Shores, MI, the home of the groom's great grandparents. It was the first wedding reception ever held on the grounds and it made for a spectacular back drop.
Sarah and Calvin were on the move all night, dancing and talking to all of their guests, never to far apart and both with amazing smiles on their faces. It was really the very best.

The Henna/Mehndi Party in Boston

Last week I photographed the beautiful wedding and preparations for Anita and Sunil at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Boston. The day before the wedding all the women took part in a Mehndi party and everyone had a henna design painted on their hands or feet while Anita had both done by the very talented Manisha Trivedi. I love this custom. All the women come together to sing and dance and eat great food. There were lots of saris and bangles. It was the best way to start the festivities.

La Grenouille NYC

Last night I photographed a private dinner upstairs at La Grenouille. The former artist studio retains its bohemian vibe and was a perfect choice of location for my out of town client who wanted the guests to feel at home. The food was wonderful. Yes I got to eat downstairs at the bar while the guest were eating upstairs. I ran up and down between mouthfuls to make sure I didn't miss anything and to burn some calories so I would have room for their famous Chocolate Souffle. Sadly I was so full at the end of the fish course that I never did make it to desert.
The flowers at Le Grenouille are famous and for good reason. Last night the theme was french country and there were flowers, fruit and lavender on every table.
If you want to have a party at Le Grenouille all you have to do is call Erin and she will take care of the rest.

Hope Funds for Cancer Research Dinner

Last night I photographed the Annual Hope Funds for Cancer Research here in New York. It has been a heat wave all week so it was amazing to see everyone looking so dashing, especially the men who were in white tie for this formal occasion.
Honorees who were presented with the 2011 Hope Funds Award of Excellence at this year's Gala were: Joan Massagué, Ph.D., for Basic Science; Kenneth C. Anderson, M.D., for Clinical Development; Larry Norton, M.D., for Medicine; Ellen Stovall for Advocacy; Donald J. Listwin, for Philanthropy; while David H. Koch was presented the 2010 Award of Excellence for Philanthropy.
The room looked amazing with 2 long tables. It felt like a State Dinner. I sat next to one of the young researchers who has been the recipient from a postdoctoral fellowship in Cancer Research from Hope Funds and who told me that it had enabled him to continue working in a lab.. He also explained that while only 6 years old Hope Funds is making a big difference in the lives of those working in the areas of many difficult-to-treat cancers that are the last ones to get funding.

Gloria Vanderbilt at The Museum of The City of New York

Yesterday was the Spring Lecture Series at the Museum of the City of New York. Gloria Vanderbilt was joined by Wendy Goodman and Matthew Patrick Smyth for the Symposium. Wendy presented a slide show of images of Gloria and her life. It was amazing to get a first hand account from Gloria herself and to get an insight into her taste in decorating and how she and Patrick have worked together. There were so many iconic images of Gloria that bought gasps of awe from the audience.
Afterwards there was lunch on the terrace of the museum.

Detroit Wedding

I arrived in Detroit today and checked into the newly renovated Westin Book Cadillac Hotel. It is great. I wanted to get into the big soft bed but instead I headed out to find food. How lucky was I that I found the best rib joint in town by mistake. I had a yummy and sinful plate of ribs at Slowes. I don't really need an excuse but if I was going to have one it is that the next 2 days are going to be photo fabulous and that means no time to think about eating.
I am so excited to be working with Sarah Fox and Calvin Ford on their wedding. I went out to check the location since the last time I was at the Edsel and Eleanor Ford house it was early sprint and the leaves were not yet on the trees.
What a beautiful location. They are predicting rain so that means clouds. I have my fingers crossed that it happens really early or very late and that we have a big dry spell between 3pm and 9pm.

Today was my last day in Fez and so we headed out of town to do some sight seeing. We went to the old Roman ruins at Volubilis. It was wonderful to be able to wander around the ancient city with the smell of the herbs growing wild around the tumbled stones. There was a large group of local school kids who came with drums and local instruments and put on an impromptu concert as we arrived.

One of the best things about staying with friends is that I get to meet people who live and work locally. Last night I meet Gail Leonard. Originally from Yorkshire this self confessed food obsessive started a company called Fez Food. She does all kinds of custom tours from walking around the medina sampling the local honey, breads, meats and spices to cooking classes and excursions all over Morocco.
It was her night off so we meet her at Fez Cafe in Le Jardin des Biehn. Tucked away behind a huge door we entered into a garden and walked along the path until we arrived at the brightly coloured veranda where we found our table. The menu was a mixture of traditional food with a hint of french cuisine.
Today we bumped into Gail as she was walking through the spice market with some american tourists. They had just sampled camel meat and were on their way to have a local coffee.

WhenI was back in Australia at Christmas I visited my old school friend Rebecca Raft and her partner PC at their home and workshop in Palm Beach. Rebecca designs and makes handmade silver jewelry and has a company called Bouvier.
A few years ago the two of them visited Fez and fell in love with the ambience, food, buildings and people in this far away exotic place. Without hesitating they found themselves an old riad that they have renovated in the heart of the medina.
Rebecca showed me photos as we sat on her terrace overlooking the gum trees and the beach and we decided that I should come and visit.
In the last few years not only have the 2 transformed a pile of rubble into a haven of tranquility they have met amazing artists and craftsmen that have brought to life many of Rebecca's designs from the hanging brass lights to the cushions and chairs. Even the pottery was made to her design and the calligraphy on the cups and plates says Dar Rafti, a play on her name.
The first night we sat on her terrace drinking coffee and nibbling on honey almond pastries that melted in my mouth while the call to prayers echoed in the background.
The next day we wandered around the medina. I am so inspired by the tiles, colors, woodwork and the hidden spaces that open as one walks through the old wooden doors.

Riad Momo

As all my friends know I am traveling with my Mum here in Morocco.
Last night we went to a restaurant where I took this photo of her. Yes it is fun to play tourists with her and in true Mum fashion she had the horse mans rifle in a jiffy. He offered to marry her but I told him I would not trade her for 100 camels.
She is an avid walker and so today with the planning help of Jabrane here at Riad Saba we headed out from Marrakesh to a place about 45 miles from the city. We were met by a guide who took us on a hike through the valley over a river and through 3 berber villages. We walked among the fruit trees and the olive groves and took time to smell the roses, the lavender and all the herbs growing along the path.
At the end we emerged upon Riad Momo overlooking the lake where we stopped for a late lunch.
The weather today was overcast which made it perfect for walking and as we ate lunch a light misty rain fell dropping the temperature to a very comfortable level. After the meal we wandered around the grounds. Next time I come back I will make the time to stay here a night.

The Colours of Marrakesh

I am loving wondering around the shops in the medina, getting lost in the little alley ways, the sounds, the sights , the smells.
No big camera with me here. They do not want to be photographed.
I slip my little Sony Cyber Shot from my pocket and snap at the objects along the way. No body seems to mind.
I see a wall of postcards and yearn to photograph the eyes staring at me.
I am haunted by am image that I saw at a museum of a woman taken many years ago.
Now she is looking at my camera, caught on a wall, as she watches the tourists walk by.

Riad Saba in Marrakesh

It didn't take long to feel right at home in this wonderful little hotel in Marrakesh, Riad Saba.
We were met at the front door by the owner Jabrane who welcomed us in and offered us mint tea and cookies as he described the best way to get around the medina and gave us recommendations for places to eat lunch. We headed down the street to Un Dejeuner a Marrakesh where we sampled local salads as we sat on the roof terrace soaking in the view.
We had decided to have a home cooked meal that night at the Riad which was the best way to end our first day.
My room is called the Chocolate room. It opens onto the central court yard on the second floor. There are only 4 other rooms to choose from and all are charming. It is a little piece of quiet heaven close to the hustle bustle of the centre square just 5 minutes walk away and a perfect place to come home to each night.
Maria, Jabranes beautiful swedish wife met us on the second morning and gave us lots of directions for all the best shops and other places to visit. Today we headed up to the mountains to walk and visit the water falls. Tomorrow I am taking my notes from Maria and am heading to the other side of town to explore the clothing stores.

Engaged at Cartier

Last night I was photographing a bridal event at Cartier when all of a sudden William Hoar one of the sales associates ran up to me to tell me one of his clients was about to propose.
I rushed over as the ring was delivered by a Cartier Page.
Trevor Wilson then got down on one knee and asked Yvonne Ryzewski to marry him. It was the sweetest moment.
The smile on Yvonne's face was huge. She was about to put the ring on when she stopped then handed it to Trevor to place on her finger.
3 seconds later William arrived back with a glass of champagne for them both and a little wedding cake with a sparkler on it. Yvonne was so excited.
She told me they had visited the store in March and that she had seen the ring then but had not imagined that he was going to propose to her in the beautiful 5th Avenue Mansion. She said it was a dream come true.

The American Ballet Theatre Spring Gala 2011

Last night after a great dinner at the Warldorf I headed to the tent at Lincoln Center to photograph the dinner for The American Ballet Theatre Spring Gala.
The first person I saw was Sloan Barnett who looked amazing in a flowing hot pink dress.
We all miss Sloan who now lives in San Francisco but she made up for it by bringing all her friend from the west coast to party at the ABT Gala.
Prince was sitting next to Susan Fales Hill but he asked not to be photographed which made Steve from WWD stake out a place by the door. He was so excited when he managed to grab a shot of the exiting star.

Moma Party in the Garden 2011

Last night was the Moma Party in the Garden and after a wonderful hour of blissful cocktails in the sculpture garden with the most perfect weather the guests went into the museum that was bathed in red light and enjoyed dinner. At the end of the night Kanye West sang at a very crowded after party back in the garden. It was so loud that I think the statues were shaking.

Quest Magazine

When I got a call a few weeks ago from Daniel Cappello the Fashion Editor at Quest Magazine I was so excited when he asked if I could step in and photograph their May Issue Jewelry story and cover just 2 days later. The photographer they had hoped to work with was suddenly unavailable and he was in the lurch. The Royal Plaza Suite at The Plaza Hotel was to be the location and the models were all organised.
It sounded fun so all I had to do was say yes.
Everyone arrived early and the hair and makeup people from Valery Joseph Salons got to work.
The suite was enormous and certainly lives up to its name. With the sun streaming into the bedroom I just had to start there. It was easy to get lost. There was a huge kitchen, a library, gym, dining room and living room.
The ladies were stunning. Coralie Charriol Paul and I had worked together before and I love her vivacious smile and bubbly personality.
Kelly Rutherford was elegant and full of ideas. When her little girl arrived we had so much fun when Kelly handed her an amazing necklace to hold.
Melanie Fascitelli was a true working mum in action. She came and got her hair and make up done then rushed of to Saks for a buyers meeting then came back to get her photos done all with out having a hair out of place.
In the afternoon Coralie's daughter also came for a visit and was happiest when in her mothers arms however she was tempted to sit in a chair and eat a carrot stick while I took one of the photos..
How these 3 women all juggle work and families and still find time to come and be photographed is a true sign of their ability to multi task and be fabulous in all situations.
At the end of the day we were all running over to the BCRF Dinner. I dashed back to the studio to change cameras and somehow they all got home in time to feed their kids, change and look gorgeous for the Gala.
I hope you pick up a copy of the magazine or maybe you are lucky enough to live in a building where they deliver it.

The Carnegie Hall 120th Birthday Concert and Dinner

Just when I thought my week could not get any better I arrived at Carnegie Hall for The Carnegie Hall 120th Birthday Concert and Dinner and headed to the Stage Door to sign in. Luckily I was early cause traffic has been crazy this week. I was standing just inside the door when Yo-Yo Ma arrived. My cameras were not yet on my shoulder so it was not obvious that I was the house photographer. I gave Yo-Yo a great big smile and he walked up to me and gave me a kiss on the cheek. I didn't say a word cause I know it was a simple case of mistaken identity but believe me when I say my knees went a little weak and it gave me a smile that lasted all night! Yes it is true I do photograph a lot of people but not every one recognises me unless I have 2 cameras around my neck.
So then it was up to the 2nd floor to photograph everyone arriving. The Weils were the first to arrive looking wonderful as always.
Mercedes Bass looked ravishing in her black one shoulder Oscar de la Renta gown.
Suzie and Bruce Kovner seem to be every where I go. They were in St Barths last month for Pamela Fiori's book signing and ever since the always shy Bruce has allowed me to take his photo. Suzie is ever radiant and was wearing a strapless ball gown.
Jesse Norman arrived with a flourish of purple gown and silver jacket.
Alec Baldwin turned heads but sadly he didn't offer to give me a kiss. Probably just as well cause I may have dropped my camera and he did have a very beautiful date by his side.
It was the 3rd night I have seen Daisy Soros this week. She stopped for a little chat and has promised to tell me how she met her husband at International House. I think there may be a scandal involved.
Marie-Josée and Henry Kravis dashed in at the last minute and I managed to get a photo before they entered their box.
It was then time for the curtain to go up so I took my place in the back to take photos.
The Lincoln Center Philharmonic was playing. It is the first time I have seen Alan Gilbert conduct and it was magic. The best way to describe it was that his body was like a butterfly and music fluttered on the end of his fingers. He was conducting the orchestra with pianist Emanuel Ax, violinist Gil Shaham, and cellist Yo-Yo Ma as the guest soloists in Beethoven’s Triple Concerto. After the intermission Audra McDonald sand some songs of Duke Ellington.
I then raced to the Plaza to get there before the guest. Dinner did not start until 10pm and the next time I looked at the time it was after mid night.

Central Park Hat Lunch 2011

Despite the rain over 1200 women braved the elements in their high heels and hats to attend the Central Park Hat Lunch. The president of the women's committee, Gillian Miniter announced that a new record had been made and that the lunch had raised over $3 million.

Last night was the International House 2011 Harry Edmonds Awards Dinner at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in NY honoring Maurice R Greenberg, Ahmed Juffali, Nand Khemka and Princess Jeet Nabha Khemka and DZ Bank. International House is a residential community for 700 graduate students from all over the world who come together to experience cross cultural cooperation and understanding.

AMERICAN FEDERATION OF ARTS LUNCH

Yesterday I was invited to attend the American Federation of Arts Spring Luncheon where Angela Westwater talked about her life in the art world and showed slides of some of the early studio visit she made over 25 years ago. It was great to see so many familiar faces.

The New York Pops 28th Birthday Gala 2011

Last night was The New York Pops 28th Birthday Gala. The night started with a performance at Carnegie Hall followed by dinner at the Plaza. This years theme was recognition of Bob Hope and of his work both as an actor and an entertainer who spent a lot of time traveling to war zones to entertain the troops. At the end they saluted all the military members both past and present in the audience as they played the 5 anthems from each division. It brought tears to my eyes as the guests stood proudly who had served this country as they received a moment of recognition. At the end the orchestra was given a standing ovation.
Next the guests headed to the Plaza Hotel where the artists sat and mingled with the crowd. Angela Landsbury looked stunning and there was a constant stream of people lined up to talk with her. I said hello to Michael Feinstein and introduced myself. He is just so talented, I also met Bob Hopes grandson Zachary when he handed me his card after I took his photo. I had no idea who he was when I snapped his photo and I must say he was very charming. It sure was a fun night.

The Metropolitan Opera Dinner on Stage for James Levine

Last night was the dinner celebrating James Levine 40th year at the Met Opera in NY. After Cocktails on the Grand Tier the guest watched a movie about James. When it was done the curtains went up and he welcomed everyone onto the stage. Food Allergy Initiative Spring Lunch

Today was the FAI Lunch at Cipriani 42nd Street and there to help organise the event was my friend Melissa and her mother Harriett Rose Katz and the team from Gourmet Advisory Services. DeJuan Stroud made the room feel like spring. It was great to see everyone out supporting this cause. So many children and adults are effected by food allergies and FAI has not only brought much publicity to the problems they have helped change food labels and supported studies to help find a cure. Right now they are searching for 40 more people to take park in testing new treatments in NY, Chicago and the west coast. For more information go to www.faiusa.org

BCRF Spring Gala 2011

This year the Hot Pink BCRF Dinner was just that! HOT and Pink! From Evelyn lauder in her fabulous tulle ball gown to Elton in his pink rimmed glasses, there were dresses in every hue and length. After dinner Elton sang and then introduced Sting who was feeling retched but managed to hold onto his music stand and sing a few songs before inviting all the women to join him on the stage and dance. It was a fun way to end the night.

The NYC Opera Gala 2011

Last night was the New York City Opera’s Spring Gala at the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center.The night honored Broadway and film composer Stephen Schwartz and I was lucky enough to get a ticket to see the performance that included the gorgeous Kristin Chenoweth, Raúl Esparza, Victor Garber, and the amazing Ann Hampton Callaway. The concert was followed by dinner and dancing on the Promenade of the Theater. Food Danny Meyer was the first person I saw so I knew that the guests were in for some wonderful food.
Next I bumped into my friend Dan Dutcher and his partner Bill who introduced me to Stephen Schwartz. It is great having friends who know everyone and Dan is just one of those people. The promenade looked great thanks to David Stark.

The Henry Ford Estate Dinner Dance 2011

I had the best weekend. It started on Friday when I left NY and jumped on a plane for Detroit. I rented myself a little red car and zipped around the city before making my way to Fairlane and the Henry Hotel. Dinner was yum in the hotel restaurant then I went upstairs and crashed. It had been a very busy week and so I was happy to dive into the big fluffy bed with lots of pillows on it. I was so tired I didn't even turn on the TV!
Next morning I went over to Grosse Point to meet Mikki Gardner, a wedding co ordinator I will be working with in June and we went to scout all the locations together. I am sooooo excited because the reception is happening at an old estate.
I headed back to the hotel and stopped on my way at a middle eastern restaurant call Amani's located at 13823 Michigan Ave in Dearborn. Wow what a meal. I had so much fun. I ordered falafels and they brought me a plate with many more than I could eat. There were 2 women ordering takeout and they asked me what I was eating..............so I asked them to join me and they both sat down and shared my meal. I don't know why these things happen more when I am traveling than when I am in NY. Maybe I become more adventurous when I leave home.
That night was the highlight of the weekend, The Henry Ford Estate Dinner Dance. This year the girls were wearing jewelry form Tiffanies and they looked fabulous. Edsel and Cynthia Ford are the best hosts. There were cocktails and dinner followed by dancing and then for the late nighter's there were sliders and onion rings to keep everyone going. The Fords were the last to leave well after midnight. The evening raised over$400,000.

Carnegie Hall 120 Anniversary Gala

There are nights and then there are NIGHTS. Last night was one of those big ones where everything is perfect and the atmosphere is buzzing.
To start it all off Clarissa Bronfman who has found time to study design in London of all places, came up with an invitation and a theme and a new location for the Gala Dinner.
Instead of the Warldorf Ballroom the event took place at Moma.
I got to see the first 3 acts of the performance before heading over to the Museum.
James Taylor was, as always fabulous as the MC. With Guitar in hand he sang and introduced Bette Midler. She is such a star in my book. Next came out Steve Martin with a 5 string banjo. Who knew he could play one? I didn't.
In the pouring rain I headed over to Moma and was excited to see the little C's all over the wall created by the talented lighting team.
See if you can spot John Travolta and his wife. I nearly missed them. They came in right before the lights went out and I started photographing before I knew who it was. They went by so fast I didn't even know it was them.

Jazz at Lincoln Center Gala 2011

What a night it was. Lisa Schiff thanked her daughter Ashley during her speech at Jazz at Lincoln Center telling everyone that it was Ashley who came up with the idea for Wynton Marsalis and Eric Clapton to do a show together and then Ashley made it happen. The gala night was the first of 3 concerts which raised over four million dollars. The first night alone raised over three and a half million dollars.
After the amazing concert everyone headed to Roselands. There were musicians galore. As I walked in the first person I saw was John Legend congratulating Wynton.
After dinner people made to the dance floor.

Anita and Sunil

We had been planning to get together for weeks and finally Saturday was here. Luckily the weather was not as it was forecast and the sun was out. Anita and Sunil came to my studio so I could take a portrait of the 2 of them. We decided that as the weather was great we would head to the Brooklyn Bridge but first we made a stop at their apartment so Anita could change her shoes. It is true, neither of them had every walked across the mighty structure so I was excited to make the journey with them. There were hundreds of people and yet some how I managed to snap a shot that makes it look like they were there alone.
I can not wait for the wedding which will be taking place in Boston soon.

Eric Clapton and Wynton Marsalis at Jazz @ Lincoln Center

I am having most amazing week. It started on Monday at 10 am. I have been sitting in on rehearsals at Jazz @ Lincoln Center with Wynton Marsalis and Eric Clapton. Eric came to NY to play 3 benefit shows and together these guys came up with an extraordinary play list. It has been awesome watching Wynton and his band collaborate with Eric.
And if that was not enough Tah Mahal flew in on Wednesday to open for the guys last night. Here are the official photos that I took that were released to the press.
After the concert the dinner was held at Roselands. When I get through with all the concert photos I will post the party pic's.

St Barths Bucket Weekend

All my friends know St Barths is my favorite place close to New York that makes me feel like I am back in Australia. I never really know why this little island has always felt this way to me. Maybe because like Australia it attracts salty sea dogs and fabulous women.
This week is the Bucket and the boats in the port are lined up one bigger than the next. Watching them entering and exiting is amazing.
Yes the women are beautiful in their flowing clothes and leather and pearl necklaces while the men are rugged with windswept faces from time spent on the water or living outside ( even if it is only for a week).
The restaurants are full at night and where ever I look there are familiar faces, some I know personally and others we all know thanks to their larger than life talents.
My excuse for this visit was that Pamela Fiori is here this week to celebrate her new book, In The Spirit of St Barths.
Last night there was a book signing at Clic. The wonderful little gallery was buzzing with activity. Olivia Chantecaille and her family were all there to support Pamela as were the Mishaans, Kino, Nichole Miller, Tony Dub, his brother Phillip with wife Gertrude, Melanie Smith and many more. The Metropolitan Opera Spring Gala

Tonight was the much anticipated opening of Le Comte Ory at the Met Opera.
The crowd was beautiful, many of the women were wearing gowns by Yves Saint Laurent.
There was a dinner held on the Balcony. The guests arrived early and had cocktails upstairs followed by dinner below. They then went in to enjoy the first act. Dessert followed during the intermission and then the guests returned to their seats for the remainder of the performance.
Mrs Ziff and Mrs Bass both looked amazing as did Claire Danes and Claudia Schiffer. I am always happy to see the always elegant Marlene Hess and her husband Jim Zirin.

Asia Society Gala

Last night the Asia Society held its Gala at 583 Park Ave. The food is always great that they serve but last night with its asian flair it was extra delicious.
There were women in saris and lots of bright colours. Naeem and Ranjana Khan plus Donna D'Cruz and her husband Tom Silverman were just 2 of the stunning couples that I saw when I first walked in. The tables were beautiful, each one designed by a different designer.
The event raised over nine hundred thousand dollars and will be used to further the artistic relationships between the US and Asia.
