Hope Funds for Cancer Research Gala 2023 Newport RI

Hope Funds for Cancer Research, dedicated to advancing innovative research for the most difficult-to-treat cancers, held its 2023 Award of Excellence Gala at Marble House in Newport, Rhode Island, on Saturday, July 15th, raising $300,000 for postdoctoral fellowships. 

The Awards Dinner and Gala is held annually by Hope Funds to provide support for programmatic activities and to raise funds for postdoctoral fellowships in cancer research.  At the white tie dinner, distinguished honorees were presented with the Hope Funds Awards of Excellence, which recognize outstanding achievements in the fields of basic research, drug development, medicine, patient support and philanthropy. 

The Chairs for the event, which included 120 guests, were Mr. and Mrs. Ross S. Cann, Dr. and Mrs. Andrew R. Mullen, and Mr. and Mrs. Gregory Van Schaack. The Jr. Committee Chairs were Mr. & Mrs. Gregg Griffin. The Honorary Chair was Dr. William G. Kaelin, Jr.

This year's honorees were William C. Hahn, M.D., Ph.D., from Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, for Medicine, Nathanael Gray, Ph.D., from Stanford University, for Basic Science, and Alexander Varshavsky, Ph.D., from Caltech, for Basic Science.

Friday July 15th, 2022 Hope Funds for Cancer Research Fellow Dinner at Marble House

Last Friday night Hope Funds for Cancer Research held their annual Fellows dinner at Marble House in Newport RI. 

The annual Fellows dinner celebrates the young researchers whom Hope Funds Cancer Research supports. Fellows who have completed their three-year post doctoral fellowships get their graduation speeches that evening, and board members, scientific advisors, and major donors, have an opportunity to meet with the young researchers and discuss their work.

Brookline Capital Markets held it annual Newport Symposium at the International Tennis Hall of Fame. Bringing together renowned Drs,  research technicians, investment specialists, and transformative Biotech companies specializing in Caner, Rare and Infectious Diseases the day was a fascinating and informative get together. New York City Ballet Fall Gala 2021

 What an amazing evening it was last night. It is fantastic to see everyone out supporting the Ballet. To comply with Covid rules the pre performance cocktails took place outside and I loved getting to mingle with the dancers and guests as they enjoyed the beautiful sun set.

The Met Opera is back.

How exciting it was to be present at The Met Opera's opening night Gala at Lincoln Center as the official Met photographer. It was a night of many firsts. The Opera was FIRE SHUT UP IN MY BONES.   With music by Terence Blanchard, this is the first opera by a black composer in the 138-year history of the Met, and the second (after George Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess) to feature an all-Black cast.

2021 Hope Funds for Cancer Research Women & Science Luncheon at the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, Rhode Island

 Hope Funds for Cancer Research hosted their 2021 Lunch at the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport RI on July 25th, 2021

The Program featured a panel of esteemed experts discussing the “Virtue of the Road Less Travelled,” which has been the source of some of medicine’s greatest discoveries, many made by women. Panelists highlighted risks they have taken in their careers or in their research that have led to important results. The panelists included a member of the Nobel Prize-winning LIGO Scientific Collaboration, a leading cancer researcher from Harvard/Beth Israel Deaconess, and two biotechnology executives whose companies are working on the cutting edge of research. The panel was moderated by the co-chair of the Hope Funds Scientific Advisory Council, Bluma Lesch, M.D., Ph.D.

The Panel was organized by Hope Funds Alumnus and Trustee Andrew Mullen, Ph.D. The Chairs for the event were Hope Funds Trustee Charles Holmes, Development Committee member Patricia Stensrud, and Hope Funds supporter Katherine Dean.

"This was a festive event with an engaging discussion that served as a reminder of how much we had missed being together, in person, to discuss important topics in scientific research," said Hope Funds Trustee Leah Rush Cann.

The organization exercised an abundance of caution to ensure the safety of guests, including holding the event outdoors and limiting seating to 80 guests on the famous Horseshoe Piazza.

“We are grateful for the support of the women, and men, who attended the Women & Science Luncheon, and especially our sponsors Brookline Capital Markets and A4 Architecture," said Andrew Mullen, Ph.D., Hope Funds Trustee, “There has never been a more exciting time to support novel scientific research.”
