2021 Hope Funds for Cancer Research Women & Science Luncheon at the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, Rhode Island

 Hope Funds for Cancer Research hosted their 2021 Lunch at the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport RI on July 25th, 2021

The Program featured a panel of esteemed experts discussing the “Virtue of the Road Less Travelled,” which has been the source of some of medicine’s greatest discoveries, many made by women. Panelists highlighted risks they have taken in their careers or in their research that have led to important results. The panelists included a member of the Nobel Prize-winning LIGO Scientific Collaboration, a leading cancer researcher from Harvard/Beth Israel Deaconess, and two biotechnology executives whose companies are working on the cutting edge of research. The panel was moderated by the co-chair of the Hope Funds Scientific Advisory Council, Bluma Lesch, M.D., Ph.D.

The Panel was organized by Hope Funds Alumnus and Trustee Andrew Mullen, Ph.D. The Chairs for the event were Hope Funds Trustee Charles Holmes, Development Committee member Patricia Stensrud, and Hope Funds supporter Katherine Dean.

"This was a festive event with an engaging discussion that served as a reminder of how much we had missed being together, in person, to discuss important topics in scientific research," said Hope Funds Trustee Leah Rush Cann.

The organization exercised an abundance of caution to ensure the safety of guests, including holding the event outdoors and limiting seating to 80 guests on the famous Horseshoe Piazza.

Hope Funds for Cancer Research Fellows Dinner at The International Tennis Hall of Fame, July 24, 2021

Last Saturday night I attended the Hope Funds for Cancer Research Fellows Dinner at The International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport RI.

Recognized at the event were James Byrne, M.D., Ph.D., of the Koch Center at MIT; Mary Jane Tsang Mui Ching of the Whitehead Institute at MIT; Christopher Pirozzi, Ph.D. of Duke University; and Juan Manuel Schvartman, M.D., Ph.D. of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Named Fellowships announced were the Sakonnett Fellowship to James Byrne and the Parks Family Fellowship to Alessandra Dall’Agnese.

"The Hope Funds Fellows represent the very best of talented young cancer researchers," said Adrian Hobden, Ph.D., Board of Trustees of the Hope Funds for Cancer Research. "Their work will have a positive impact on our ability to understand and treat the most difficult and deadliest cancers." 

In addition to honoring the graduating Fellows, Hope Funds presented the Honorable David Gordon with its Tiedemann Award for Courage.

Hope Funds for Cancer Research Gala 2021

 Last weekend I attended the Hope Funds for Cancer Research Gala 2021. The Hope Funds is dedicated to advancing innovative research for the most difficult-to-treat cancers, The Award of Excellence Gala, at Marble House in Newport, Rhode Island, on Sunday, July 25th, raised nearly $300,000 for postdoctoral fellowships.

The Honorees receiving awards were Patricia F. Bilden, M.D. Susan Band Horwitz, Ph.D. Melissa Moore, Ph.D. Jedd Wolchok, M.S., M.D., Ph.D. and Joan A. Steitz, Ph.D.

"Being together, in-person, for the first time in more than 18 months, honoring these luminaries in the presence of our postdoctoral researchers and donors was fantastic," said Gala Co-Chair Andrew Mullen, PhD. The organization used an abundance of caution to ensure the safety of the guests, including holding the dinner outside and limiting seating to 70 guests on the Terrace and another 30 in the enchanting Marble House folly, the Tea House. “All 100 guests joined together for dessert buffet at the end of the evening, and scientists and supporters caught up on the progress made in the last year," said Leah Rush Cann, chair of the Executive Committee of the Board, “It was a magical evening.”

Hope Funds For Cancer Research 2020 Gala Weekend

This year as COVID changed the world we live in, Hope Funds for Cancer Research was faced with the challenge of how to move forward with their annual weekend of events. 
After long discussions and many ideas it was decided to go ahead with the Scientific meeting and Women in Science panel discussion to be held over Zoom and to replace the white tie gala with a casual dinner for the local patrons and volunteers keeping the group to under 20 guests and having it outside at the Tennis Hall of Fame and more than 100 virtual guests viewing a film on Hope Funds produced by Hope Funds Life Trustee Gary Jobson.
The weekend was a huge success and still managed to raise over $200,000.
Hope Funds Trustee Leah Cann and her husband Ross kicked off the weekend by dressing up in their formal wear and standing outside the Breakers, the location for the future Gala to be held in December of 2021.
After the Zoom meeting was done the crew took time for some group photos to help document the occasion.
While many researchers have been called to help discover a vaccine for COVID, the work of cancer research remains the focus for Hope Funds. Their contribution to the world of science continues.

New York City Ballet fall Gala 2019 with Sarah Jessica Parker and friends at Lincoln Center NYC

Last night was the Fall Gala for the New York City Ballet at Lincoln Center in NY. I was so thrilled to be in the midst of such a radiant crowd lead by the always stunning and everyone's favorite NY Belle of the Ball Sarah Jessica Parker. I was also so happy to see Lizzie Tisch and Indre Rockefeller with their myriad of friends. Zac Possen dressed many of the women who's gowns were fabulous. I have to say Laverne Cox stole the show for me. She arrived late and was asking for a cocktail. The bar had closed but I convinced her I would find her a drink if she would pose for a photo. She did and somehow I found a bartender who saw the desperation in my eyes when I told her I needed a glass of champagne PRONTO!!!!! She found the last bottle hidden under the bar and opened it for me just in time for Laverne to get her drink before being whisked off to the theater.

Hope Funds for Cancer Research White Tie Gala Newport 2019

Rosecliff, the historic Newport, Rhode Island mansion, was the beautiful setting for the Hope Funds for Cancer Research Annual Awards of Excellence Gala on Saturday, July 27. More than 130 guests enjoyed cocktails on the terrace and lawn prior to the dinner honoring luminaries in the fields of basic research, clinical development, medicine and philanthropy. The event raised funds for two three-year post-doctoral fellowships in cancer research.

Hope Funds Women In Science Lunch in Newport

I was so happy to photograph the Hope Funds Annual Women in Science Luncheon that took place on Saturday afternoon at the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport.  The event focused on the progress and challenges faced by women researchers, and featured a discussion with leading figures in the field of life sciences research, with proceeds supporting Hope Funds postdoctoral fellowships in cancer research.
